I’ve been there.
I wanted to create this post to provide you with a truly helpful resource that combines the ways God has ministered to me through His Word in my writing with the collective biblical wisdom of writers from my writing community. Here, you’ll find a treasury of Scriptures to guide you in every part of learning to wield words for God’s glory..

My Favorite Writing Verses: How Scripture Shapes My Writing
Before we dive into the full list, I’d like to share a few of the Bible verses for Christian writers that I personally cling to. These Scriptures have become my guideposts for navigating the joys and challenges of this calling.
For Curing Writer’s Block Before It Starts
“For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks (Matthew 12:34c).”
Writer’s block is often a symptom of an empty well. Matthew 12:34 reminds me that what I write flows from what’s in my heart. Because I can’t write from an empty inkwell, I must first fill my heart with the good treasure I want to pour onto the page. In a sense, this verse is my ultimate cure for writer’s block.
For Remembering the Responsibility of Our Words
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue (Proverbs 18:21 NKJV).”
Proverbs 18:21 is a sobering truth for all communicators, including writers. The words we publish have power.
“I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned (Matthew 12:36–37).”
Matthew 12:36-37 keeps me in check, reminding me that I’m accountable to God for everything I write and share.
For Properly Handling God’s Word
“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15).”
Weaving God’s Word into our writing comes with great responsibility. Second Timothy 2:15 challenges me to take the time to study the Scripture I use, ensuring I read it in its proper context rather than just pulling out a single phrase that appeals to me.
This diligence, however, is fruitless if it’s not rooted in a relationship. So, John 15:4 reminds me that my writing cannot be fruitful if I neglect my own dependence on God.
“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me (John 15:4).”
We must abide in the Vine to produce anything of worth.
Along the same line, Psalm 34:5 challenges me to keep my eyes on Jesus, so that my life and words will naturally reflect Him.
“Those who look to him are radiant,
and their faces shall never be ashamed (Psalm 34:5).”
For Embracing the Refining Fire of Editing
“The words of the Lord are pure words,
like silver refined in a furnace on the ground,
purified seven times (Psalm 12:6).”
Editing can be scary, but Psalm 12:6 completely changed my perspective on this vital part of the writing process. My words are far from perfect, but as with silver, refining is necessary to make them purer for God’s glory. It’s a kind of sanctification for our words.
This process often requires the “faithful wounds of a friend” described in Proverbs 27:6, 9.
“Faithful are the wounds of a friend;
profuse are the kisses of an enemy…
Oil and perfume make the heart glad,
and the sweetness of a friend comes from his earnest counsel (Proverbs 27:6, 9).”
Finding mentors and critique partners who provide earnest counsel is God’s provision for us. Their feedback, while sometimes painful, is what helps us improve our writing for the blessing of others.
For Stewarding Our Gifts Faithfully
“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen (1 Peter 4:10–11).”
“Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them… (Romans 12:6)”
Finally, passages like 1 Peter 4:10–11 and Romans 12:6 encourage me when I’m tempted to give up. They remind me that God wants me to use the gifts He has given me, including my writing.
This, combined with the Parable of the Talents in Matthew 25, compels me to faithfully steward all He has entrusted to me—my message, my skills, and my time—to serve others and glorify Him.

Bible Verses That Encourage Fellow Writers
I’m not the only one who draws strength from Scripture in my writing. I asked my community of writers to share their favorite verses, and their responses were a powerful testimony to God’s faithfulness.
“But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God (Acts 20:24).”
—Shared by Cheryl Balcom, who says, “I have this on my website; it undergirds everything I write.”
“The Lord God has given me
the tongue of those who are taught,
that I may know how to sustain with a word
him who is weary.
Morning by morning he awakens;
he awakens my ear
to hear as those who are taught (Isaiah 50:4).”
—Shared by Aimee Cooks, who finds encouragement in the idea of having a “well-instructed tongue” to sustain the weary.
“‘The Lord is my portion,’ says my soul,
“therefore I will hope in him.’
The Lord is good to those who wait for him,
to the soul who seeks him (Lamentations 3:24-25).”
—Shared by Kristin Couch, who repeats it weekly as a “sturdy reminder that my hope is anchored in the Lord, rather than potential outcomes, high fives, or man’s praise.”
“Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58).”
—Shared by Lauren Iseli as a powerful reminder that our efforts are not useless.
“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong (2 Corinthians 12:9-10).”
—Shared by Amber North, who relates Paul’s thorn in the flesh to her own struggles.
“Commit your works to the Lord,
And your thoughts will be established (Proverbs 16:3 NKJV).”
—Shared by Barbara Latta, who focuses on surrender. “I can’t create godly writing unless I am surrendered to Him.
“Be sure to give to the Lord the best portions of the gifts given to you (Numbers 18:29 NLT).”
—Shared by Kathy Giles. “It reminds me to remember where all my words come from and for whom I am ultimately writing.”
“that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God’s mystery, which is Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge (Colossians 2:2-3).”
—Shared by Joanna Harris, who holds to the goal that readers “may be encouraged in heart and united in love… in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ.”
“For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable (Romans 11:29).”
—Shared by Kendra Hess as inspiration.
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them (Ephesians 2:10).”
—Shared by Ronne Rock, who sees us as “heaven’s poetry etched on lives… to accomplish the good works God arranged long ago (PTP).”
“Come and see what God has done:
he is awesome in his deeds toward the children of man…
Come and hear, all you who fear God,
and I will tell what he has done for my soul (Psalm 66:5, 16).”
—Shared by Diane Billing, who is struck by how John was instructed to write down the Revelation of Jesus Christ. “God wants all to hear of the only true hope.”
“Seek the Lord and his strength;
seek his presence continually (Psalm 105:4)!”
—Shared by Alyson Jensen as a verse that helps her rely on the Lord.
