Rehoboth

You do not have because you do not ask. - James 4:2

Tired of starting over? Maybe you’ve worked really hard or poured a lot into something only to have it snatched from you. Or you were forced to abandon it for some reason or another. Whatever the case, starting over – especially multiple times – can be discouraging.

Isaac could relate. He dug a well for his family and flocks only to have it taken over by others. He was forced to abandon it. So he dug another well. Once again, it was taken from him. A third time, he started over and dug another well. This time, he was able to keep it and it proved to be a reliable source for his people.

That third well was named Rehoboth. Isaac said, “Finally there is space for us (Genesis 26:22).”

Then he worshipped God and went on to dig more wells and expand his territory and prosper, according to God’s promise to him.

Last year was a year with a lot of well-digging for many people. Jobs were lost. School was cancelled. Isolation was mandated. Then things opened up again. Then they were shut again. And so the cycle went (and continues).

If Isaac’s story sounds like your own, why not pray for a Rehoboth? Ask God to make a space for your next “well”, your next job, your next endeavor. There is biblical precedent for asking God for blessing – David in Psalm 67:1, Jabez in 1 Chronicles 4:10, and Jacob in Genesis 32:26.

Or consider James 4:2 – “You do not have because you do not ask.”

Our God is a faithful Provider. He can make a way where there seems to be no way. Ask Him, then wait and see what He’ll do.
